first_imgFirst Lady Sandra Granger on Thursday officially launched the Anira Foundation, a non-profit organisation which is focused on the education and empowerment of vulnerable groups.First Lady Sandra Granger, Founder of Anira FoundationThe foundation seeks to increase efforts to advocate for the health and well-being of Guyanese youth, particularly young women, through strategic initiatives.The Anira Foundation was conceptualised in 2017 and has already executed a number of projects.The First Lady, in her feature address, told the gathering that it was her passion to establish the foundation which will empower youths, especially young women.“The name Anira is based on my sentiment about the street on which I grew up, which was full of children…my memories of Anira Street, like my memories of St Joseph High School, are very fond ones and full of positive memories…I recognise that my husband’s period in office is finite and I began thinking two years ago about what I would do to continue the work I had begun…,” the First Lady stated.The First Lady also told the gathering that work has already commenced at the foundation since its initial stages.“We have already begun our work under the Anira Foundation umbrella and those of you who would have been following the news, will know that one of the first donations was to our STEM Guyana team which enabled them to purchase their competition robot and prepare for the recently concluded first global robotics competition in Dubai…,” she noted.The Anira Foundation consists of a Board of Directors made up mainly professional women in various fields, who have all come together to combine their skills, thoughts and ideas in order to achieve the objectives of the organisation.Also present at the launch was Communities Minister Ronald Bulkan, who gave his commitment to partner with the organisation to help achieve its objectives.The Anira Foundation will facilitate projects in various regions across the country with more focus on remedial education, education assistance, ICT workshops for adolescents, and out of school youth, self-reliance and success in business workshops among others.last_img
