Joe Worsley – Wasps and England

first_img Joe Worsley during an England practise day He’s been capped over 300 times for Wasps and made over 70 appearances for England, so its safe to say that Joe’s one of the most reliable players the game has seen. Rugby World caught up with ‘Melonhead’ to chat about Cooper cat, embarrassing moments and doing favours for friends. RUGBY WORLD: So who are the jokers in the Wasps and England squads?JOE WORSLEY: James Haskell definitely. He’s always up to stuff, but it’s a case of what you can tell the public! He’s always trying to make life more difficult for Tom Rees.RW: Yeah, he seems to have a vendetta against Tom. Any good practical jokes you can share?JW: I’m partly to blame for this one. Tom Rees went on Soccer AM recently and we persuaded the presenters to ask him about entering Robot Wars, Star Trek, auditioning to be the Milky Bar Kid and so on. James has got plenty of stories about Tom.RW: How do you keep occupied while in camp during the Six Nations?JW: I read my book or the papers. I read quite an eclectic selection of stuff. At the moment I’m reading The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins. I also watch a bit of TV or a movie. The other week I was watching Californication.RW: What’s the funniest thing you’ve seen on the pitch?JW: Peter Bracken. I’ll leave it at that.RW: Have you got any nicknames apart from Melonhead?JW: Not really. I’ve had it since school and no one’s come up with anything else.RW: What are your bugbears?JW: Our cat, Cooper Cat. He peed on our Bang & Olufsen television. We’ve had him for eight years but if it wasn’t for my missus he wouldn’t still be alive!Crazy haircuts, Clive Owen and life after rugbyRW: Any embarrassing moments?JW: Playing the piano in front of a live studio audience and butchering the rendition. It was some time after the 2003 World Cup and I was awful. It’s a different kettle of fish in front of a live audience and I was a bit out of practice.RW: What about that crazy haircut you had in 2001 [he had short spike dreads] – any regrets?JW: I did that as a favour for a friend who was a hairdresser. Unfortunately I got photographed while I had it like that. People think I had it for ages, but it was only like that for four days. I probably do regret that – it wasn’t exactly the greatest haircut in the world.RW: Who’s your ideal woman?JW: My wife, Nicky. Tom ReesAndy Powell RW: What couldn’t you live without?JW: My wife.RW: What’s your favourite joke?JW: I’m trying to remember the one I heard recently. It was about prostitutes and bungee jumps, though, so I don’t think it’s appropriate for Rugby World.RW: If a film was made of your life, who would you want to play you?JW: God knows. Jeff Goldblum. No, not him. There’s a guy who’s been in lots of films, but my mind’s gone blank. I can’t think of his name. He was in a film with Natalie Portman. Clive Owen! He’s relatively tall and looks vaguely like me.RW: Who would you like to be stuck in a lift with?JW: Derren Brown. I don’t know if I’d want him to hypnotise me, but I’m sure he could teach me a thing or two while we were stuck in there.RW: If your house was on fire, what three things would you save?JW: My wife, my son and I can’t think what else. I’d make sure the cat was still in there, though!RW: Have you still got a big baseball glove chair?JW: Yeah, it’s in the bedroom. It’s very comfy – everyone likes to sit on it.RW: What would you like to achieve outside of rugby?JW: Once the challenge of rugby has past, I’d like to take on another challenge that is equally as difficult. Football inspires performing arts

first_img5 July 2010When it comes to the arts, football may not seem an obvious source of inspiration. But this year, there was an emergence of football-related performances at South Africa’s National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. The annual festival, which ran from 20 June to 4 July, is one of the largest arts festivals in the world. It draws artists and actors from around the world and features around 600 independent shows, exhibitions, lectures and cultural acts.“Art is not exclusive. Art is an integral part of daily life. I don’t believe that sport and art need to compete,” said Ismail Mahomed, National Arts Festival director, who has been running the festival for three years.“We recognize that the team [Bafana Bafana] played a considerable role in a journey of discovery for us as a nation. Similarly, with arts, you immerse yourself into the soul of a nation.‘Exploring a pool of creativity’“We offer[ed] people the opportunity to engage with soccer – but between matches, through exploring a pool of creativity that defines us as a nation.”Among the shows that used football as a central theme, there was an Australian one-man show production called “The football diaries”; a dance, theatre and music extravaganza by an international cast called “Football football”; a Makarapa exhibition; and even a gala performance by the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra featuring two World Cup songs.Star performer Mpho Osei-Tutu acted in a debut one-man show called Convincing Carlos, directed by award-winning Craig Morris. The French-born South African actor and screenwriter played several characters in a story of a Bafana Bafana-mad family man who is seduced into believing that he has been chosen to save the national team from global embarrassment ahead of the 2010 Fifa World Cup™. His plan? To convince South Africa’s World Cup coach, Carlos Alberto Parreira, to return at all costs.‘Passionate about football’“The number of people at the stadiums shows how immersed we are in the game, how people are passionate about football, and I’ve managed to get quite a lot of soccer fans to come watch the show,” said Osei-Tutu.But it’s the way arts, like sport, can unite people through the sharing of experiences that got Osei-Tutu the most excited. “I love telling human stories and reaching people. There are six billion stories to tell, but it’s the engaging people across all borders that I love the most.”For Arts and Culture Minister Lulama Xingwana, hosting the 2010 Fifa World Cup is the moment in which South Africa can invite the world to celebrate Africa’s humanity through rhythms, harmonies and visions.“This is your moment. This is your time to share with the world the richness of our people, the vibrancy of our cultures, and the resilient spirit of a nation that is determined to be an important role-player on the world stage,” said Xingwana at the opening event of the festival.Source: 2010 Fifa World Cup South Africa Organising Committeelast_img read more

first_imgAbout the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say Arsenal boss Emery reluctant to change XI over Christmas programmeby Paul Vegas10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveArsenal boss Unai Emery won’t ring the changes over the Christmas programme.Emery will not unnecessarily rest players during the next week despite the threat of further injuries. He said: “In my career I never made these decisions. We are going to play the next match in Brighton and we are going to play full, not with considered options or playing with more caution.”The same three points are in Brighton that are in Liverpool and we are going to play first in Brighton. It’s a tough match and we will need every player with 100 per cent focus to do everything on the pitch to win.”I was speaking with Koscielny about the possibility of playing against Burnley and he said ‘not today’ because he was very tired after two matches in a week, so I decided for him not to be with the group. He said, ‘I’m not Matteo Guendouzi, Matteo is 19 and I’m 33!’.” last_img read more

10 months agoMan Utd Transfer Watch: Four centre-backs Solskjaer should target

first_imgMan Utd Transfer Watch: Four centre-backs Solskjaer should targetby Phillip Ekuwem10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveFollowing Jose Mourinho’s exit, Manchester United are looking to get their season back on track under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s guidance going into the second-half of the season. Considering the team’s defensive woes, the one area United undoubtedly need to bolster is their backline, primarily the centre-back position. Eric Bailly’s future at the club is currently uncertain, and the likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are evidently not good enough to turn out for United on a regular basis. As such, here’s a look at four centre-backs United could realistically sign in January…Toby AlderweireldIt’s no secret that Manchester United are huge admirers of the Belgian centre-back having made attempts to sign him in previous transfer windows. Alderweireld has been a consistent performer at Tottenham since his arrival at the club, but with his proposed one-year contract extension at Spurs set to trigger a £25m release clause, Manchester United could snap him up at a relatively cheap price.Alderweireld is good with the ball at his feet and even better at preventing players from penetrating his side’s defensive line. He’s one of the best defenders in the Premier League and would be an excellent addition to United’s backline.Video Courtesy of Mathews FootballAndreas GranqvistAndreas Granqvist would be a more temporary option, but a good one nonetheless. The Helsingborgs man has been linked with a move to Manchester United since October. The 33-year-old was one of the best defenders in the World Cup back in June, as he marked players tightly and made key interceptions against highly skilled opponents. He also showcased his ability from spot-kicks, although should he sign for United, it’s unlikely that Pogba will give up his penalty taking duties.Granqvist has previously said that an offer from Manchester United would be ‘very hard’ to turn down, so should Solskjaer’s side table a concrete offer for the Swedish defender he’s likely to make the switch.Video Courtesy of Defence is an ArtDiego GodinGodin has a lot to offer United in terms of leadership and defensive contributions. The Uruguay international has been an integral part of both his national team set-up and Atletico Madrid for many years, so much so that he’s widely regarded as one of the best defenders of his generation. He’s reportedly got a £20m release clause which won’t be any trouble for United to pay, but the main hurdle is getting him to make the switch as he’s rejected offers from the club in the past.Godin would add a much-needed layer of protection to Manchester United’s back four considering his expertise in dealing with tricky and pacey forwards having face a number of world-class attackers with great success throughout his career.Video Courtesy of HN FootballHarry MaguireManchester United’s pursuit of Harry Maguire ended last summer because club chairman Ed Woodward refused to meet Leicester City’s valuation of the English centre-back.United have a much bigger need for a quality centre-back than they did back in August having already played through half of the season with defensive problems. The Leicester man has Premier League experience and World Cup experience so he knows what it is to play under pressure in massive games. Leicester are likely to demand a similar fee to what they asked for in August but whether United would take the same stance they did back then is unknown – one thing’s for sure, though – they need Maguire’s quality.Video Courtesy of Scouting Football TagsTransfersOpinionAbout the authorPhillip Ekuwem FollowShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

US colleges attracting fewer new students from abroad

first_imgThe number of foreign students heading to U.S. colleges and universities fell again last year, the second straight decline after more than a decade of growth, a new report finds.Enrolment of new international students dropped by about 7 per cent in fall 2017, according to an annual report released Tuesday by the State Department and the Institute of International Education, a non-profit research group based in New York. The overall number of foreign students in the U.S. still increased slightly, by 1.5 per cent, fueled by growing numbers of students who stayed for temporary work after graduation. But the number of newly arriving students slid to about 271,000, the lowest levels since 2013.The report’s authors cited sharper competition from other countries including Australia and Canada, along with the rising cost of education in the U.S. They largely dismissed worries among some colleges that the White House’s policies and rhetoric surrounding immigration could be driving students away.“We’re not hearing that students feel they can’t come here. We’re hearing that they have choices,” Allan Goodman, president and CEO of the institute, said in a call with reporters. “For the first time, we have real competition.”But some schools contacted by The Associated Press say the political climate in the U.S. has made international students feel unwelcome, leading some to enrol elsewhere.State Department officials underscored that the U.S. hosted nearly 1.1 million international students last year, more than any other country in the world.Yet the 1.5 per cent growth is the slowest since a period from 2002 through 2005, when international enrolment fell by 4 per cent following the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001, according to data provided by the institute.Among new students, the steepest losses came from Saudi Arabia, South Korea and Mexico, while China and India continued to send the largest numbers, accounting for more than half of all foreign students in the U.S.The 15 per cent decrease from Saudi Arabia comes a year after the kingdom scaled back a scholarship program that covered costs for Saudis studying abroad.Although the report focuses on data from 2017, it also included preliminary findings for fall 2018. Among 540 schools surveyed, total international enrolment held level while the number of new students fell by about 2 per cent, marking the third straight year of declines.Compared to the previous year, more schools attributed decreases to challenges in the visa process, the U.S. social and political climate, and student decisions to enrol in other countries. At the University of Central Missouri, foreign enrolment surged to 2,600 in 2016 before plummeting to just 650 this year, according to data obtained by The AP. University officials have noticed increased competition but also cite the nation’s political climate.“We have had conversations with parents who feel like their children will not be safe here, that their son or daughter may not be physically safe,” said Karen Goos, the school’s assistant vice provost for enrolment management. “I do think that it’s a contributing factor.”At Purdue University, one of the nation’s biggest hubs for international students, total foreign enrolment fell by 2 per cent this year. Officials said they intentionally admitted fewer undergraduates from abroad amid worries that they might not accept the offer.“There was concern that students might not find the U.S. to be as an attractive destination given certain political rhetoric these past two years,” Michael Brzezinski, Purdue’s dean of international programs, said in an email.Losing foreign students can carry financial implications for schools that rely on them for revenue. Unlike U.S. citizens, who often get scholarships or discounts, students from abroad are typically charged full tuition. At Central Missouri, the declines have worsened a budget hole that led to more than $20 million in cuts last year.At the same time, some other nations have drawn surging numbers of students from abroad. Canada reported a 20 per cent jump in 2017, while Australia saw a 12 per cent increase. Both countries have set ambitious goals to bolster international enrollments in the coming years.Yet officials in Australia said they shouldn’t be blamed for America’s slowdown. Phil Honeywood, CEO of the International Education Association of Australia, said pinning it on competition is “pure blame shifting,” adding that Australia hasn’t significantly changed its recruiting strategy over the past two years.“Rather, everything we hear from prospective students and their education agents in Muslim countries and Latin American nations is that they no longer feel welcome or safe studying at U.S. colleges under President Trump,” Honeywood said in a statement.Despite the downturn in new students, officials behind the report are optimistic that the U.S. will rebound. While foreign students account for a heavy share of the overall enrolment in Australia and other countries, they account for just 5 per cent of all students in the United States.“The U.S. has real competition,” Goodman said. “What we have going for us, though, is we have more space and capacity.”The report also found that the number of U.S. students studying abroad ticked up by 2 per cent last year, continuing eight years of slow but steady growth. Europe remained the top destination, followed by Latin America and Asia.___Follow Collin Binkley on Twitter at https://twitter.com/cbinkleyCollin Binkley, The Associated Presslast_img read more
