This may not sound a lot, she said, but 4,800 companies employee half the working population so payroll giving schemes are currently accessible to around six million people.Over the two-year life of the government’s SME grant programme more than 3,300 new companies have set up schemes, which Steele said included a good tranche of medium sized organisations with between 100 and 200 employees. She admitted that there is still a preconception that it is a complicated procedure and that this was likely to have put some smaller companies off, even though the process has been streamlined to make it easier to operate. Steele said the Institute was also running a series of training events in the summer to help smaller charities join together as local ‘consortia’ to promote themselves to local businesses. As part of the activities to celebrate 20 years of payroll giving the Institute has launched the first national Payroll Giving Awards, which will include the best scheme and best relaunched scheme. The awards will be presented at a reception at the Treasury in October. About Howard Lake Howard Lake is a digital fundraising entrepreneur.
