A group of men, who were arrested after Police busted the gang that has been breaking into new homes on the East Bank of Demerara, have been charged.The four men appeared at the Providence Magistrate’s Court on Friday and were placed on $200,000 bail each after denying the charge of breaking and entering the Providence, EBD home of an attorney-at-law.Charged were Nigel Clarke, 50, a security guard residing at Plantation, Providence; Shawn Chung, 36, a taxi driver of Herstelling, East Bank Demerara; Avinash Wright, 25, a labourer of Herstelling, East Bank Demerara and Raul Poulis, 40, a shopkeeper of Craig Village, East Bank Demerara. They were all arrested last Tuesday.The four men appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scarce on Friday.They were slapped with the breaking and entering charge, which stated that they broke into the home of Laurian Bancroft, 38, a lawyer of Plantation, Providence, East Bank Demerara sometime between June 20 and 24.The prosecution is contending that the men stole 20 sacks of Mortar Skill Sets worth $40,000 and three toilet bowl sets worth $180,000. They are also accused of stealing one welding plant valued $20,000, a cone drill press valued $100,000 and one chop saw valued $50,000, property of Roy Singh, a contractor of Craig Street, Campbellville, Georgetown.More charges are expected to be filed against the men shortly. The case will continue on July 30, 2019.
The senior panel’s fitness program continues on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Motiv8 gym in Letterkenny at 8:00 pm. Freshman Becca Hittner (Urbandale, Iowa) followed with a career-high 20 points, also adding seven rebounds. Sophomore Sammie Bachrodt (Wichita, Kan.) joined the duo in double-digits with 13 points, 11 of which came in the second half. Illinois State made the first field goal of the game and the teams traded baskets for the first several mintues of the contest. Drake quickly seized control of the game and held a 10-point lead with 3:49 left in the opening quarter. The Bulldogs would lead by as many 54 points in the easy win. Next Game: DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake women’s basketball team coasted to a 101-49 victory over Illinois State Friday night, Feb. 10 at the Knapp Center. Drake forced 19 turnovers and nabbed 14 steals. Both Wendell and Jonas snagged four steals, a career-high for Jonas. The team dished out 31 assists, 10 of which came from senior point guard Caitlin Ingle (Runnells, Iowa). Drake (19-4, 12-0 MVC) earned its 13th-straight win, making them 12-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference to match the record for the best start in MVC history. The Bulldogs shot 37-of-62 (59.7 percent) including a 12-of-23 (52.2 percent) performance from beyond the arc. Every Bulldog scored at least four points, and played at least 14 minutes with no players recording more than 24 minutes. Illinois State (6-17, 3-9 MVC) was led by Taylor Stewart who put up nine points for the Redbirds while Viria Livingston tied Hittner for a game-best seven rebounds. The Bulldogs continue their homestead as they welcome Bradley to the Knapp Center on Sunday.
