SAN FRANCISCO — The Giants summoned pitcher Ty Blach to the big leagues on Monday with one goal in mind. They wanted Blach to provide aid out of the bullpen against a Dodgers team with a slew of left-handed sluggers who have struggled against him in the past.Blach received his chance against Los Angeles on Tuesday, but he turned in one of the worst outings of his major league career in a 10-3 blowout loss.“It didn’t work out with Ty’s hiccup, but he was the guy that was going to be the long …

Virat Kohli is on the verge of creating history. He has now led India to eight successive series victories in Test cricket. If India beat Sri Lanka in the Test series on the return tour later this year, Kohli will edge closer to Ricky Ponting’s world record of 10 straight Test series wins. But that is where the real challenge starts. India’s next assignment will take them away from home to South Africa, where they have never won a Test series. Over the last couple of times, India have been competitive, drawing a series in 2011 and losing another one narrowly in 2013-14.(Jadeja banned for Pallekele Test after dangerously throwing ball at Sri Lankan batsman)Make no mistake, Kohli’s India have not had it easy despite playing at home mostly. Their away Test matches have been against Sri Lanka (2015 and 2017) and West Indies (2016). Besides, England were competitive and Australia could have done some serious damage – they had won in Pune and made life really difficult for the hosts before they finally prevailed in the cooler climes of Dharamsala to pull off a memorable win. India, riding high on their overall supremacy, made lightwork of the islanders and cruised away to two comprehensive wins in Galle and Colombo.advertisement2-0 #TeamIndia #SLvIND pic.twitter.com/10V1xaOEig- BCCI (@BCCI) August 6, 2017But Sanjay Manjrekar, the former India batsman, put it all in perspective when he said Kohli should do perhaps do what Imran Khan had done in his stint as Pakistan captain: ask the authorities for sterner tests against better opponents. (STATS: R Ashwin’s record spree continues as India win another Test series)And sterner tests will come. South Africa were blown away by India in 2015 but they are a different kettle of fish in their own conditions. The fast wickets, the fast bowlers and the explosive batsmen will present a challenge this Indian team would be eagerly awaiting. For all that it’s worth, Team India is no longer in a phase of transition. The players have plenty of experience in the longest format – they have a settled side that even the Proteas cannot possibly boast of given their recent travails with injuries to key players. Ab de Villiers is not yet certain of his future in the Test arena and Hashim Amla is increasingly beginning to look like he is struggling to hold his own at the top of the order.Dale Steyn’s fitness of course has been a major cause for concern while skipper Faf du Plessis would be under pressure to lead from the front and be the catalyst the side need him to be.But all their flaws could be ironed out when South Africa find themselves in the comfort of their home conditions. For India, it would be an opportunity to show to the world that they are the only side in this era who have the ability to dominate teams everywhere.India will also soon travel to Australia in the coming months before setting sail to England, which will bring back vivid memories for the India captain: but is Kohli ready? Is Cheteshwar Pujara ready? Can Ajinkya Rahane inspire in the middle order? Will the pacers, who have bowled so heroically in the sub-continent, pick up pace and rattle the pros in their own den?Say cheese! @imjadeja with the Man of the Match award for the 2nd Test #TeamIndia #SLvIND pic.twitter.com/ZJEizvCcvK- BCCI (@BCCI) August 6, 2017
Man Utd Transfer Watch: Four centre-backs Solskjaer should targetby Phillip Ekuwem10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveFollowing Jose Mourinho’s exit, Manchester United are looking to get their season back on track under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s guidance going into the second-half of the season. Considering the team’s defensive woes, the one area United undoubtedly need to bolster is their backline, primarily the centre-back position. Eric Bailly’s future at the club is currently uncertain, and the likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are evidently not good enough to turn out for United on a regular basis. As such, here’s a look at four centre-backs United could realistically sign in January…Toby AlderweireldIt’s no secret that Manchester United are huge admirers of the Belgian centre-back having made attempts to sign him in previous transfer windows. Alderweireld has been a consistent performer at Tottenham since his arrival at the club, but with his proposed one-year contract extension at Spurs set to trigger a £25m release clause, Manchester United could snap him up at a relatively cheap price.Alderweireld is good with the ball at his feet and even better at preventing players from penetrating his side’s defensive line. He’s one of the best defenders in the Premier League and would be an excellent addition to United’s backline.Video Courtesy of Mathews FootballAndreas GranqvistAndreas Granqvist would be a more temporary option, but a good one nonetheless. The Helsingborgs man has been linked with a move to Manchester United since October. The 33-year-old was one of the best defenders in the World Cup back in June, as he marked players tightly and made key interceptions against highly skilled opponents. He also showcased his ability from spot-kicks, although should he sign for United, it’s unlikely that Pogba will give up his penalty taking duties.Granqvist has previously said that an offer from Manchester United would be ‘very hard’ to turn down, so should Solskjaer’s side table a concrete offer for the Swedish defender he’s likely to make the switch.Video Courtesy of Defence is an ArtDiego GodinGodin has a lot to offer United in terms of leadership and defensive contributions. The Uruguay international has been an integral part of both his national team set-up and Atletico Madrid for many years, so much so that he’s widely regarded as one of the best defenders of his generation. He’s reportedly got a £20m release clause which won’t be any trouble for United to pay, but the main hurdle is getting him to make the switch as he’s rejected offers from the club in the past.Godin would add a much-needed layer of protection to Manchester United’s back four considering his expertise in dealing with tricky and pacey forwards having face a number of world-class attackers with great success throughout his career.Video Courtesy of HN FootballHarry MaguireManchester United’s pursuit of Harry Maguire ended last summer because club chairman Ed Woodward refused to meet Leicester City’s valuation of the English centre-back.United have a much bigger need for a quality centre-back than they did back in August having already played through half of the season with defensive problems. The Leicester man has Premier League experience and World Cup experience so he knows what it is to play under pressure in massive games. Leicester are likely to demand a similar fee to what they asked for in August but whether United would take the same stance they did back then is unknown – one thing’s for sure, though – they need Maguire’s quality.Video Courtesy of Scouting Football TagsTransfersOpinionAbout the authorPhillip Ekuwem FollowShare the loveHave your say
New Delhi: A 38-year-old man has been arrested for giving instant triple talaq to his wife, the first such case registered in the national capital since the practice was criminalised, police said on Saturday. The arrest was made on Friday at 11.00 pm after a 30-year-old woman lodged a complaint against her husband in north Delhi’s Bara Hindu Rao police station. However, the man got a bail by a court on Saturday, a police officer. “On June 23, her husband pronounced talaq three times upon her and sent a fatwah on WhatsApp mentioning that triple talaq was pronounced,” said DCP (North) Nupur Prasad. Also Read – After eight years, businessman arrested for kidnap & murderThe DCP said he has been booked under the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019. According to police, this is the first such case registered in the national capital. Parliament on August 1 approved the bill that makes instant triple talaq a criminal offence. Police said the couple got married in 2011, and the man runs a shop in Kamla Market in north Delhi. In a complaint, the woman alleged that she was being harassed for dowry by her husband and his family. Also Read – Two brothers held for snatchingsShe alleged that on June 28, “under a well-planned conspiracy”, her husband and his family members had come to her room and forced him to pronounce triple talaq. Thereafter, he pronounced the word talaq three times, and they all asked her to leave the house along with her six-year-old son, she alleged. “I came to my parental house, but parents were not present as they were outside the country. After two days, they sent my brother fatwah on WhatsApp that divorce is complete and she cannot come back again,” the woman said in her complaint. Further investigation is underway, police said. In a similar case, a man was charged for allegedly giving triple talaq to his wife over the phone in Uttar Pradesh’s Kushinagar district in August this year. Abdul Raheem, who is working in Saudi Arabia, divorced his wife Fatima Khatoon by saying “talaq” three times over phone.
The Big Ten relinquished a 3-0 lead in the Challenge early Tuesday night, and eventually needed OSU’s victory to finalize the Big Ten’s first win in 11 tries. Turner said it has been frustrating to constantly hear about ACC’s dominance over the Big Ten and the rest of the country. In the second half it was all OSU. The Buckeyes forced FSU to play fast with their smaller lineup and pushed a lead to more than 20. Florida State fought back within two, but that was the closest the Seminoles would come all night. OSU opened its lead back up to 11 at halftime with key shots and strong defense. “That’s a championship right there. It’s huge,” Turner said jokingly about the win. “You can’t say this is the biggest night of our lives, [though]. We’ve had some pretty big nights.” The game played out the same way the Big Ten/ACC Challenge had early on. Like the rest of the Big Ten, OSU garnered an early lead, but just as its conference had done, the Bucks left the door open. But when in doubt, the Buckeyes and their conference pulled it out. Junior Jon Diebler used guard Evan Turner’s penetration to set up big shots for three. He knocked down six of 12, scoring 22 on the night. Turner again set the pace for OSU, immediately penetrating and scoring within seconds of the tip-off. Effective penetration to the basket is something Turner excels at even though he was unable to utilize in OSU’s only loss of the season, to North Carolina. “Our penetration and our shooters were really amazing tonight and we really complement each other well,” Turner said. “That was key for us.” His 25 points on 10-17 shooting led the Buckeyes. He also added 13 rebounds and five assists. The Ohio State men’s basketball team triumphed over Florida State, 77-64, Wednesday in the final game of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The Buckeyes put the final nail in the ACC’s coffin, giving the Big Ten the deciding win and its first ever victory in the Challenge’s 11-year history. Turner joked earlier in the week that if the Challenge was tied at five games apiece, a victory would call for confetti and cutting down the nets. No nets were removed after Big Ten’s first ever win over the ACC, but a ton of pressure finally was.
Ohio State senior guard Asia Doss delivers a pass during the Buckeyes’ game against Louisville on Nov. 12. Credit: Colin Hass-Hill | Sports EditorPlaying on the same court on which the 2018 Final Four will take place, No. 5 Ohio State and No. 9 Louisville played a back-and-forth contest featuring a high pace and 60 combined 3-point attempts. But just two days after the Buckeyes took down No. 10 Stanford 85-64, they could not defeat their second top-10 opponent in a row.Behind junior guard Asia Durr’s 47 points, the Louisville women’s basketball team staved off a fourth-quarter comeback from Ohio State which sent the game into overtime and beat the Buckeyes 95-90 Sunday evening at Nationwide Arena.Durr hit shot after shot from beyond the arc, finishing 16-for-29 from the field and 9-for-15 on 3-point attempts. The Cardinals rode her to victory as she scored 13 of her team’s 15 overtime points.Ohio State made a run late in the fourth quarter. Senior guard Kelsey Mitchell drilled a 3-pointer with 2:32 remaining to give Ohio State its first lead since the beginning of the third quarter. It came back from an eight-point deficit with 4:55 remaining to pull ahead of the Cardinals. With Louisville leading by one point, redshirt senior forward Stephanie Mavunga rejected forward Myisha Hines-Allen’s shot with 10 seconds remaining. Mitchell recovered the ball and raced up the court, but was fouled by guard Jazmine Jones. She converted just one of two free throws to tie the game at 80. Mitchell seemed nonexistent in the first half as she entered halftime with just three points. But the preseason All-American exploded down the stretch, scoring 23 of her 26 points in the in the second half. She added a game-high eight assists.Ohio State redshirt senior guard Linnae Harper added 21 points and seven rebounds. Mavunga, who had 23 points and 26 rebounds against Stanford, was held in check for most of the game. She had just four points and six rebounds in 30 minutes. She and Mitchell fouled out in overtime.Ohio State’s success — or failure — was based on its ability to hit 3-pointers. Ohio State made 17 of 40 3-pointers, but could not find consistent offense when it did not hit 3s. When the Buckeyes struggled to connect from deep, they fell behind while Louisville efficiently converted on 36-of-73 shots from the field and made 12-of-20 3-pointers. But when Ohio State hit consecutive triples, it pulled closer to Louisville.Though Louisville led for 38:16 of the game, the Buckeyes constantly remained in striking distance. Ohio State led for just 4:02, but trailed by no more than nine points in the second half. The Cardinals dominated the interior, collecting 47 rebounds while Ohio State grabbed just 29 boards. Of Louisville’s rebounds, 13 came on the offensive glass, which assisted them in putting up 15 second-chance points.Ohio State found an unlikely source of offense in the first half in senior guard Asia Doss, who scored just three points in the season opener.Down 21-13 with less than two minutes remaining in the first quarter, Doss found herself with the ball in her hands and the shot clock winding down. She launched a 3-pointer and swished the long-range shot. Then on the next possession, an open Doss drained her second shot from beyond the arc in a row. Trailing by 13 points in the second quarter, Ohio State seemed in danger of falling behind by a deficit from which it could not recover. But Doss drained another 3-pointer, sparking the Buckeyes. The Buckeyes went on a 14-2 run in the final 3:50 of the half to pull back within one point and went into halftime trailing 41-40. Mitchell punctuated the run when she hit her first shot of the game, a 3-pointer with 33 seconds remaining in the half. She went 5-for-8 from 3-point range in the half and led the team with 17 points. No one else on her team had more than six first-half points. Doss finished with 19 points.Ohio State will be back in action at 7 p.m. Wednesday when the Buckeyes take on Idaho in their first game of the season at the Schottenstein Center.
River Plate President Rodolfo D’Onofrio hopes that the coming days will mark the end of violence in Argentine football and its society.Rodolfo spoke to Marca in the hours leading up to the grand final between Boca Juniors and River Plate and he is confident that there will be no violence even after receiving threats to his life and family.“This Thursday in the Congress, a law was projected against that and the House is approving very strong sanctions for those who commit those acts.”“I want this to be an example for Argentine football so that there is a before and after. As England did with the hooligans, in Spain with the ultras… the hardest law must be applied. I hope to see improvement on this.”“It’s a great shame that the most important match in Argentina has to be played in another country. I also hold the AFA responsible because those who manage it would have had to talk with the institutions.”Match Preview: River Plate vs Boca Juniors Boro Tanchev – September 1, 2019 It is time for one of the most intense derby games in the world, as River Plate and Boca Juniors go head-to-head tonight at 22:00 (CET).“You don’t have to gather an army to be able to play football, but intelligence.”“You have to turn the page after everything that has happened. We are already in Madrid and we are trying to concentrate on the match. We want it to be a party atmosphere and understand that it is a game, it’s not about the death of anyone.“Both teams are representations of what is the Argentine’s passion for football. I hope you see a real show and not what’s happened over the last days.”
