Is InNOut Burger coming to Salem Not quite yet

first_imgPORTLAND — A sign on the side of a Salem, Ore., building announcing an imminent In-N-Out Burger appears to be a hoax. But better news could be on the horizon. The sign, stapled to plywood outside a building in downtown Salem, is a fake, according to In-N-Out Vice President of Operations Denny Warwick. This isn’t In-N-Out playing coy, either. According to Warwick, the building is “not a site that we are familiar with.”So does that mean there are Salem sites that the company is familiar with?Indeed it does.“We have looked at and evaluated a few sites in Salem and the surrounding area but we are still in the very early stages of development and are not yet ready to move forward with a particular location,” Warwick says.If In-N-Out did come to Salem, it would become the burger chain’s northernmost restaurant, leapfrogging their recent openings in Grants Pass and Medford, Ore.The state capitol is a little more than an hour south of Vancouver.last_img read more

Game of Thrones season 8 episode 4 is going to have a

first_imgGame of Thrones season 8 episode 3 leakGame of Thrones (@gameofthrones/Instagram)Game of Thrones star Kit Harington was not happy after learning the truth about Night King’s final fate but has recently revealed that he is pretty excited for the upcoming episode 4 of the final season as it has a mysterious twist in it.Game of Thrones season 8 episode 4 will show the aftermath of the battle of Winterfell. As per Kit Harington, the upcoming episode four is his favorite one in the entire season as in the episode, his character has finally got what he always wanted. At the same time, this would appear for the first time when Jon Snow will get time to celebrate with his family and friends.”The world is safe now. They’re celebrating and saying goodbye to lost friends. But as an audience you’re going, ‘This is only episode 4, something’s going to happen.’ And that’s the cool thing because I think the characters are aware of this as well. There’s something twisted and uncomfortable about it. It’s so Shakespearian,” he told Entertainment Weekly. As of now, we can only speculate as to what will happen in the upcoming episode of Game of Thrones. We know for a fact that Night King and his army is dead and now Cersei Lannister is the only living enemy left in the entire Westeros. Kit Harington as Jon SnowFacebook/ Game of ThronesMeanwhile, Kit also talked about the most anticipated moment in Game of Thrones history. The final moment when Arya Stark ends Night King and his hundreds and thousands of White Walkers including the zombie dragon. Kit explained that he had expected that he would be the one to kill Night King and was “pissed” when he learned that Arya Stark will be the one to kill him. From the very beginning, we knew that Jon Snow is going to be the one who will kill Night King. The character literally practiced for the moment his entire life and even had Valyrian steel sword to end the White Walker. But fans were rejoiced after learning that Maisie Williams’ Arya Stark killed Night King.”Jon Snow’s always been the hero, the one who’s been the savior. But it just didn’t seem right to us for this moment,” Kit said. “I think it’s an inspired move. You’ve always been waiting as to what purpose Arya’s assassin skills are going to lead to, and it’s for the most important purpose.”Kit Harington will return as Jon Snow/Aegon Targaryen in Game of Thrones season 8 episode 4.last_img read more

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the man who told UK PM Boris

first_imgIndian PM Narendra Modi meets UK PM Boris JohnsonTwitterIndia’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a unique way of bonding with global leaders. Invited to the G7 meeting as a special guest, Modi has been having bilateral meetings with heads of state like French President Emmanuel Macron and US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the summit. When PM Modi met UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, he had an especially good news to convey to him. The meeting between the two leaders took place just after Ben Stokes had led the England team, almost single-handedly, from the jaws of defeat to one of their most famous Test wins. The Indian leader didn’t miss this opportunity to break the good news to his British counterpart, according to India Today. We don’t know as yet what the instant reaction of PM Johnson was but he must have been extremely delighted. He was later also congratulated by the Australian PM Scott Morrison when the two leaders met on the sidelines of G7.The victory over Australia was one of the finest ever that England have achieved in their legendary Ashes rivalry. Just the bare facts convey the enormity of the achievement. England were nine-down while still needing 73 more runs to win. Ben Stokes, then, engaged in a 76-run partnership with the no. 11 batsman Jack Leach to take his team home. Boris Johnson with former India cricketer Arun Lal during a visit to IndiaTwitterWhat made this spectacular performance from the English all-rounder special was that in the 76-run partnership he had for the last wicket, all but 2 runs were scored by him. What’s more, these 74 runs were scored in just 45 deliveries by Stokes. Leach faced only 17 balls in the entire partnership and was brilliantly protected by his partner.Ben used the popular formula of taking the strike on the first four or five balls of an over and then leaving just one or two deliveries for his colleague to deal with. Yet, the two batsmen also needed a great deal of luck to get to their target. There was a dropped catch in the deep as well as two missed run-out opportunities that kept England in the game. Lastly, Stokes was given not out by the umpire when he was plumb lbw and the decision wasn’t altered because Australia had wasted their reviews on hopeless appeals. There is another reason for the UK PM to rejoice in his team’s victory. Apparently, he too played cricket in his college days at Oxford apart from rugby. Perhaps, PM Modi knew of this fact and also the importance of Ashes cricket when he decided to give his counterpart the good news.last_img read more

Senate Presses Ahead On 365B Disaster Relief Package

first_img Share Twitter User @ReutersFrom the photo archives: a look at  Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria wreaked havoc on the island. The Senate is pushing ahead on a $36.5 billion hurricane relief package that would give Puerto Rico a much-needed infusion of cash. The measure also would replenish rapidly dwindling emergency disaster accounts and provide $16 billion to permit the financially troubled federal flood insurance program to pay an influx of Harvey-related claims. But it rejects requests from the powerful Texas and Florida congressional delegations for additional money to rebuild after hurricanes Harvey and Irma. The measure was certain to sail through Monday’s procedural vote and a final vote was expected no later than Tuesday. That would send the measure to President Donald Trump for his signature. There is urgency to move the measure swiftly — rather than add more money to it at this time — because the government’s flood insurance reserves are running out.Still, members of the Texas and Florida delegations in Congress are unhappy because the measure failed to address extensive requests for additional hurricane rebuilding funds. Texas, inundated by Harvey in August, requested $19 billion, while Florida sought $27 billion.“I’m pretty disappointed with what the House sent over,” Texas GOP Sen. John Cornyn said Thursday. But later, after speaking to both Trump and White House budget director Mick Mulvaney, Cornyn said he was promised that the White House would issue another disaster aid measure next month that would provide much-needed help for Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico. A fourth, and perhaps final, measure is likely to anchor a year-end spending bill. The measure currently before the Senate contains $577 million for wildfires out West that forced agencies to tap other reserves for firefighting accounts and FEMA money for the disastrous fires in northern California.Republicans dragged their feet last year on modest requests by former President Barack Obama to combat the Zika virus and help Flint, Michigan, repair its lead-tainted water system. But they are moving quickly to take care of this year’s alarming series of disasters, quickly passing a $15.3 billion relief measure last month and signaling that another installment is coming next month.last_img read more

Opinions Range on Housing Immigrant Children

first_imgThe push to find homes for hundreds of unaccompanied Central American immigrant children increases as Maryland leaders search to find a solution to the current immigration crisis. The prevailing thought is that the children are leaving their home country due to the violence they’re forced to endure. For many Central American children, gangs are taking over the streets and the idea of fleeing to the United States seems a better option. With more than 50,000 immigrant children coming into the United States in less than a year, more pressure is being put on Maryland to house some of them. However, options for shelter spaces are running low as controversy has scrapped some shelter locations in Baltimore City and Westminster.Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said she is open to the idea of turning vacant federal buildings into shelters, just a day after Gov. Martin O’Malley spoke out against the idea.  He supports an expanded foster care network or placing the children in private homes.Catholic Charities proposed placement of about 50 children in their St. Vincent’s Villa in Baltimore County, saying the housing would be funded through a mix of federal dollars and donations. They would also provide health and educational services for the children. While there seems to be varying views about the issue, one thing is for sure, and that is a solution for Maryland’s child immigration crisis needs to be found quickly.  According to the Health and Human Services Department, between Jan. 1 and July 7 Maryland has taken in 2,205 unaccompanied immigrant children. On a per capita basis this means that Maryland has more unaccompanied immigrant children who are settled with sponsors than any other state. Administration officials said the reason is based on the high proportion of Maryland residents from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala, the countries from which most of the immigrant children are fleeing.Baltimore residents have much to say about the crisis and how the children should be handled.Kendra Carr can see the changes that are happening in the neighborhood from the recent influx of immigrants and believes the mayor’s idea is not bad.“If they are going to do something about these vacant [buildings] in Baltimore, then yeah,” said Carr, who’s lived in the city about five years. “If this is their incentive to finally clean up Baltimore and do something with a lot of these vacant properties, then I definitely think it’s a great idea, especially since you don’t want these kids roaming the streets and potentially getting into trouble becoming part of all the crime that is happening here anyway.”Alnita Sherrill feels it’s the thing to do.“A lot … have issues with having people that are different from them living in their backyard,” said Sherrill. “To me having immigrants should be allowed, because if we have the space and the ability to house them then why not?”In regards to expanding the foster care system, Sherrill thinks Mayor Rawlings-Blake should expand the system for all children.“Well I think it’s a good idea if she does it not only for the sake of the immigrant children who are coming in, but for the sake of the children who are already here,” Sherrill stated.  “I’ve come from the system, not personally, but knowing the system, knowing that it’s already overworked and already underserved when it comes to having workers to work with the kids and placement for the children, so it’s already over utilized and the need is great.”Marilyn Blanding agrees with Sherrill’s sentiment of looking out for Baltimore children as well.“We have to look out for our own children too because our children need help.  The housing is terrible because you can’t find housing for people and we have a terrible homelessness situation going on, but if every, all states participated maybe it wouldn’t be so bad,” said Blanding.Blanding doesn’t think expanding the foster care system would be a cure-all. “It may not be a full solution to the problem, because our foster care system is booked, overbooked.  It’s mainly our Black children who need foster care and I don’t want to boot our Black children out,” she said.In regards to Catholic Charities helping the immigrant children, Blanding thinks it’s a good idea.“It may help them. I can see Catholic Charities trying to help them because that’s what they do,” she said. “As long as somebody helps them, not just throw them in a building somewhere and leave them there.  If Catholic Charities can do that, then I’m for it. Help them get an education, help them go forth and do whatever it is they need to do to move up.  Maybe they can better themselves and go back and take care of their people in their country.”Howard W. Roberts, coordinator of Urban Youth Ministries within the African American Ministries of The Archdiocese of Baltimore, said Catholic Charities should definitely help.“I think it’s automatic, it’s a no brainer; we should be doing likewise for all those who are in their most trying time of need and we worked efforts throughout the Archdiocese here to sort of support any way we can,” Roberts said. “It’s only right that we treat those who are likewise coming from other places in the way we would want and in the way I think should be modeled by anybody who professes to be a Christian. We’ll let them sort out the politics later but the first issue is to address their immediate needs and make sure the people feel as safe and welcomed as we would want to be or have been at some point in our history of this country.”Roberts also gave some more insight as to what the African American Ministries are doing to help provide relief.“We do a series of efforts as individual churches. We work with about 14 churches out of the office of African American Ministries and those individual churches are a part of all those fundraising efforts,” Roberts said. While most people seem to think that some type of relief should be provided to immigrant children coming into Maryland, William Richards believes otherwise.Richards believes that unaccompanied immigrant children “should be at home with their parents.”  He also said most immigrants coming into the country are not children, but are “adults and young adults who are in gangs” and are “using the border as an excuse to sneak into the country.”  He also believes that we must help our own homeless children and people in Maryland who have issues and need shelter before we help others from outside of the country.Vera Richards, a resident of D.C., seems to think the opposite by not viewing immigrants coming into the U.S. as a problem.“The view that immigrants are a problem is isolated to the individuals who believe immigrants are taking ‘what is not theirs to have’. From my knowledge, most immigrants are willing to work 10 times harder than the folks complaining about them. America will only continue being a leading power if we have the people willing to work,” Vera Richards said.In regards to immigrant children coming into the United States, she said, “I agree that the children should remain in America. They are here to feel safe and be educated. Children are the leaders of the future and as such, America should invest in them. Children should be afforded the opportunity to achieve the ‘American Dream’.”  “When it comes to helping, D.C. needs to follow the same guidelines it places on its residents. Provide immigrants with a job and place them on a program so that eventually they become tax paying citizens giving back to the community.”last_img read more

Facebooks CEO Mark Zuckerberg summoned for hearing by UK and Canadian Houses

first_imgYesterday, the chairs of the UK and Canadian Houses of Commons issued a letter calling for Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s CEO to appear before them. The primary aim of this hearing is to get a clear idea of what measures Facebook is taking to avoid the spreading of disinformation on the social media platform and to protect user data. It is scheduled to happen at the Westminster Parliament on Tuesday 27th November. The committee has already gathered evidence regarding several data breaches and process failures including the Cambridge Analytica scandal and is now seeking answers from Mark Zuckerberg on what led to all of these incidents. Mark last attended a hearing in April with the Senate’s Commerce and Judiciary committees this year in which he was asked about the company’s failure to protect its user data, its perceived bias against conservative speech, and its use for selling illegal material like drugs. After which he has not attended any of the hearings and instead sent other senior representatives such as Sheryl Sandberg, COO at Facebook. The letter pointed out: “You have chosen instead to send less senior representatives, and have not yourself appeared, despite having taken up invitations from the US Congress and Senate, and the European Parliament.” Throughout this year we saw major security and data breaches involving Facebook. The social media platform faced a security issue last month which impacted almost 50 million user accounts. Its engineering team discovered that hackers were able to find a way to exploit a series of bugs related to the View As Facebook feature. Earlier this year, Facebook witnessed a backlash for the Facebook-Cambridge Analytica data scandal. It was a major political scandal about Cambridge Analytica using personal data of millions of Facebook users for political purposes without their permission. The reports of this hearing will be shared in December if at all Zuckerberg agrees to attend it. The committee has requested his response till 7th November. Read the full letter issued by the committee. Read Next Facebook is at it again. This time with Candidate Info where politicians can pitch on camera Facebook finds ‘no evidence that hackers accessed third party Apps via user logins’, from last week’s security breach How far will Facebook go to fix what it broke: Democracy, Trust, Realitylast_img read more
