MS Dhoni asks for match ball after Leeds ODI. Twitter is abuzz

first_imgIs MS Dhoni retiring? Twitter was abuzz with rumours of India’s most successful captain bowing out of international cricket after a short video of him asking for the match ball after the Leeds ODI went viral.Dhoni had retired from Test cricket in 2014 during the tour of Australia but continued to play the shorter formats. In a similar and sudden move, Dhoni then stepped down as India’s limited-overs captain in January 2017.The 37-year-old was in good form during the 2018 IPL, scoring 455 runs as Chennai Super Kings won their third title. His form during the tournament raised hopes he could replicate that in the international arena. However, he struggled during the Lord’s ODI after India were tasked with chasing 323. Dhoni managed 37 off 59 balls as the asking rate kept climbing. Frustrated by his go-slow approach, sections of the crowd booed him on a day when he became the fourth Indian to cross the 10,000-run mark in ODIs.On Tuesday, in the series-decider, Dhoni scored 42 but he was once again far from his dominant self as India managed only 256 at Leeds. England, riding on Joe Root’s unbeaten 100 and Eoin Morgan’s 88 not out, raced away to a comprehensive victory to snap India’s winning run of nine ODI series. As the players walked off after the match, Dhoni asked for the match ball from the umpire. A video which has now gone viral shows Dhoni, who was with Virat Kohli at the moment, calmly asking for the match ball. It is not yet clear why he asked for the ball – could it be just to check what condition it was in. However, that very act got Twitter abuzz with rumours that Dhoni might retire.advertisementHere’s the video of the MS Dhoni taking the ball from umpires after the game. #ENGvIND pic.twitter.com/C14FwhCwfqSai Kishore (@KSKishore537) July 17, 2018Fans wondered if it was the end of the Dhoni era.
