Voter turnout in upcoming elections may drop nearly 50 percent due to COVID-19: LSI

first_imgHe went on to say that LSI had reached such a conclusion following a recent survey on regional elections involving respondents in several parts of the country. However, he did not disclose the research method or details regarding the survey respondents.Read also: Majority of public wants regional elections delayed: SurveysAccording to Djayadi, this year’s estimation fell short of the 73.42 percent voter turnout in the 2018 regional elections.Furthermore, the study also found that access to online campaigning was still limited to people who could afford a stable internet connection, leaving the less fortunate demographic with little to no information regarding the candidates.Djayadi said he hoped that election organizers would impose strict health protocols at polling stations to prevent COVID-19 contagion among voters.“I’m concerned that voters may become COVID-19 superspreaders,” he said. (rfa)Topics : Voter turnout in the upcoming regional elections may decrease 20 to 60 percent amid coronavirus concerns, the Indonesian Survey Institute (LSI) said.LSI executive director Djayadi Hanan said many voters were likely to be hesitant to visit the polling stations in their respective communities on Dec. 9 due to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak in the country.“Let’s say around 20 to 46 percent of the public are hesitant or less likely to visit polling stations, this [indicates] a potential for reduced participation,” Djayadi said during an online forum on Saturday as quoted by kompas.com.last_img read more

Fed seeks to offer reassurance amid push for new US stimulus

first_imgBut the continued fiscal support that Fed officials – including Chair Jerome Powell – say the world’s largest economy needs to weather the downturn has yet to be approved, and with nowhere to go on interest rates, economists predict the policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) will rather attempt show they are doing their part.”America’s central bank is likely to emphasize a decidedly low rate outlook for years to come to help nurse the world’s biggest economy back to health after a record contraction,” said Joe Manimbo, senior market analyst at Western Union Business Solutions, referring to the second quarter when the business shutdowns caused GDP to collapse by a record 31.7 percent annualized. As the meeting got underway on Tuesday, Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the Democrat-led House of Representative, announced a new attempt to break weeks of deadlock with the White House and Republican-controlled Senate on passing a new spending bill.”We are committed to staying here until we have an agreement,” she said on CNBC, adding that she was “optimistic that the White House, at least, will understand that we have to do some things.” Armed with a new interest rate strategy, the Federal Reserve will seek to reassure the United States economy rattled by the coronavirus downturn as it wraps up its policy meeting on Wednesday. The two-day event concludes amid a renewed push by a top lawmaker in Washington to agree on an additional spending bill to prop up the economy following a historic collapse in gross domestic product (GDP) in the second quarter and data showing a worryingly high rate of new layoffs. The United States is home to the world’s worst coronavirus outbreak with more than 194,000 deaths, and in the pandemic’s opening days the Fed slashed its benchmark lending rate to near-zero and rolled out trillions of dollars in liquidity lines to keep markets functioning. Layoffs still highWhen unemployment is low, FOMC meetings can be suspenseful affairs as committee members mull over whether or not to shift their benchmark rate. But no longer. The Fed last month rolled out a new average inflation targeting policy that will keep rates lower for longer in a bid to maximize employment for the benefit of poor workers.”There is little that is expected to come out of the meeting. Indeed, barring a major rebound in the virus, little is expected for the next couple of years,” economist Joel Naroff said. “The members could keep phoning, or should I say videoing, it in. It would save time and money.” The unemployment rate spiked to 14.7 percent in April as the business shutdowns to stop Covid-19 exacted their toll, but has since since declined to 8.4 percent in August as states loosened lockdown restrictions, while key sectors of the economy like housing and retail sales have posted rapid recoveries. But Labor Department data shows elevated levels of people filing new unemployment benefit claims each week, with 884,000 filed in the week ended September 5.The meeting will see participants give economic projections and forecasts for as far ahead as 2023, which Steve Englander, managing director at Standard Chartered Bank, expects will predict “slow recovery, slow pickup in inflation.”Calls for supportThe Fed is loathe to intervene directly in politics but Powell and others officials have repeatedly said the US economy needs more spending to make it through the downturn. The US$2.2 trillion CARES Act passed in March included provisions like an extra $600 in weekly payments to the unemployed and a program of loans and grants to prop up small businesses. But those provisions expired in recent weeks and Democrats last week blocked a $500 billion proposal in the Republican-controled Senate that would have partially restored the weekly payments.Powell is scheduled to speak after the meeting concludes at 1800 GMT, and David Wessel, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, said he’d be watching the chair’s comments for signs of his opinion on the wobbly situation.”With the economy showing a slightly better than expected rebound and Congress paralyzed by partisan tensions, he may be even more circumspect,” Wessel said.Topics :last_img read more

Tokyo Olympic athletes face tracking apps if virus persists, says task force

first_imgOlympic athletes could face strict controls on movement and repeated coronavirus tests under measures discussed Wednesday by a task force charged with finding ways to safely hold the postponed Tokyo 2020 Games. With less than a year until the Olympics, organizers and Japanese officials met for the second time with a long list of possible requirements on the agenda.Athletes may have to submit a detailed plan of their activities in advance — and pledge to follow it — or save their whereabouts on a “map app”, according to documents prepared for the meeting. They may also be required to undergo frequent coronavirus testing — including three days before leaving home, another on arrival, and others during their stay. They will, however, be allowed to train during any quarantine.”Tests are one of the most important issues from the two perspectives of securing safety and a sense of security for athletes,” Tokyo 2020 chief executive Toshiro Muto told a press conference.”We’d like to create a system, or mechanism, to continue testing when they enter Japan.” But, Muto said, ensuring the reliability of pre-departure testing in every country — and guaranteeing the accuracy even of high-precision PCR tests — will be a challenge.Tokyo 2020 Olympics Games mascots Miraitowa (2nd L) and Someity (2nd R) ride on a boat during a parade in front of spectators with karate practitioner Kiyo Shimizu (L) and para athlete Hajimu Ashida (R) in Tokyo on July 22, 2018. Japanese organisers formally introduced their doe-eyed 2020 Olympic mascots to the world on July 22, christening them with superhero names that could provide a tongue-twisting challenge to some.(AFP/Toshifumi Kitamura )’Cautious optimism’ The 2020 Games were postponed in a historic decision earlier this year because of the coronavirus pandemic and are now set to open on July 23 next year.Other restrictions floated in Wednesday’s meeting included athletes avoiding public transport where possible and also introducing social-distancing “pedestrian traffic lanes” in venues and Olympic villages.Common spaces such as lobbies, lounges and traditional hot spring baths might also be closed to reduce social contact. When asked how the rules would be enforced, Muto said it depended on which restrictions were chosen. The postponement of the Games has caused all manner of logistical headaches, forcing the renegotiation of contracts with venues and hotels, and efforts to keep sponsors on board for another year.Topics :last_img read more

Asymptomatic COVID-19 patients occupy 45 percent of self-isolation hotel beds in Jakarta

first_imgEditor’s note: This article is part of a public campaign by the COVID-19 task force (Satgas COVID-19) to raise people’s awareness about the pandemic. Data released by the Joint Regional Defense Command (Kogabwilhan) I, which is in charge of the facility during the pandemic showed that those people comprised patients with mild to moderate symptoms, who are staying in towers 6 and 7 as well as asymptomatic patients isolated in towers 4 and 5.The self-isolation facilities are provided by the government for those who are unable to quarantine at home because they live in houses that are too small or which are shared by many family members or are in close proximity to other houses.Separately, Jakarta Health Agency public health unit head Fify Mulyani said that two more hotels were being prepared to accommodate asymptomatic COVID-19 patients. They are Max One Sabang, Central Jakarta, and Grand Asia Hotel, North Jakarta.Read also: In virus-stricken Indonesia, many can’t afford to self-quarantine at home The number of asymptomatic COVID-19 patients undergoing self-isolation at three hotels in Jakarta has reached 319 patients, around 45 percent of the total capacity of 706 beds.Data from the national COVID-19 task force show that as of Thursday night, U Stay Hotel in Mangga Besar, West Jakarta, accommodated 114 patients, 63 percent of its total capacity of 180 patients. Meanwhile Ibis Style Hotel in Mangga Dua in Central Jakarta accommodated 77 patients, 22 percent of 336 beds and Ibis Hotel Senen also in Central Jakarta accommodated 128 patients, 67 percent of its total 190-bed capacity.Meanwhile, 2,951 COVID-19 patients are staying at the former athletes village in Kemayoran – now an emergency hospital for COVID-19 patients in Central Jakarta. Topics :center_img Fify however did not elaborate on the total capacity of the two additional hotels. “Today they will start to receive patients,” she said in a text message.Previously, Fify explained that patients could not choose the place for the free self-isolation facilities provided by the government.“It depends of recommendations from their community health center [Puskesmas],” she said as quoted by kompas.com.Meanwhile the task force also recorded 88 patients staying at Kyriad Hotel in Tangerang, Banten. The hotel has a total capacity of 165 beds.Furthermore, Jakarta’s plan to put stickers on the houses of residents currently self-isolating has met with a mixed reaction. Some think it is it is essential to use the stickers to inform other people about the health status of residents that live in the house, but others have warned about the stigmatization of asymptomatic COVID-19 patients self-isolating in their homes.Jakarta Ombudsman head Teguh Nugroho suggested the government increase the role of neighborhood units (RT) and community units (RW) to help monitor residents self-isolating at home, instead of marking their houses.  (iwa) #covid19taskforce #mothermessage #wearmask #keepyourdistance #washyourhand #socialdistance #avoidcrowd #usesoaplast_img read more
